Machine Shop Supervisor Requirements & Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; technical or trade school training in machining preferred
- 5+ years of machining experience in manufacturing, ideally in steel or heavy industrial settings
- 2+ years of supervisory or lead experience in a machine shop strongly preferred
- Strong knowledge of CNC machining, G-code, tooling, feeds and speeds, and setup practices
- Proficiency in interpreting blueprints, technical drawings, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)
- Familiarity with precision measurement tools (such as micrometers, calipers, and bore gauges)
- Ability to lead, coach, and develop team members in a production environment
Machine Shop Supervisor Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Supervise daily machine shop operations, including CNC and manual machining, turning, milling, drilling, and finishing
- Assign and prioritize work to meet production schedules and customer requirements
- Ensure setup, tooling, programs, and documentation are correct for all jobs
- Promote and enforce safety policies and lead regular safety meetings
- Verify that machining output meets quality standards and partner with quality teams to address issues
- Train and coach machinists and support staff, facilitating cross-training and skill development
- Coordinate with maintenance to maximize machine uptime and implement improvements to reduce scrap and enhance efficiency
- Maintain accurate records of production, labor, and inventory
