Machine Shop Supervisor Requirements & Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required; technical or trade school training in machining preferred
5+ years of machining experience in manufacturing, ideally in steel or heavy industrial settings
2+ years of supervisory or lead experience in a machine shop strongly preferred
Strong knowledge of CNC machining, G-code, tooling, feeds and speeds, and setup practices
Proficiency in interpreting blueprints, technical drawings, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)
Familiarity with precision measurement tools (such as micrometers, calipers, and bore gauges)
Ability to lead, coach, and develop team members in a production environment

Machine Shop Supervisor Day-to-Day Responsibilities

Supervise daily machine shop operations, including CNC and manual machining, turning, milling, drilling, and finishing
Assign and prioritize work to meet production schedules and customer requirements
Ensure setup, tooling, programs, and documentation are correct for all jobs
Promote and enforce safety policies and lead regular safety meetings
Verify that machining output meets quality standards and partner with quality teams to address issues
Train and coach machinists and support staff, facilitating cross-training and skill development
Coordinate with maintenance to maximize machine uptime and implement improvements to reduce scrap and enhance efficiency
Maintain accurate records of production, labor, and inventory
