Machine Shop Supervisor Requirements & Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical or trade school training in machining preferred
  • 5+ years of machining experience in manufacturing, ideally in steel or heavy industrial settings
  • 2+ years of supervisory or lead experience in a machine shop strongly preferred
  • Strong knowledge of CNC machining, G-code, tooling, feeds and speeds, and setup practices
  • Proficiency in interpreting blueprints, technical drawings, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Familiarity with precision measurement tools (such as micrometers, calipers, and bore gauges)
  • Ability to lead, coach, and develop team members in a production environment

Machine Shop Supervisor Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Supervise daily machine shop operations, including CNC and manual machining, turning, milling, drilling, and finishing
  • Assign and prioritize work to meet production schedules and customer requirements
  • Ensure setup, tooling, programs, and documentation are correct for all jobs
  • Promote and enforce safety policies and lead regular safety meetings
  • Verify that machining output meets quality standards and partner with quality teams to address issues
  • Train and coach machinists and support staff, facilitating cross-training and skill development
  • Coordinate with maintenance to maximize machine uptime and implement improvements to reduce scrap and enhance efficiency
  • Maintain accurate records of production, labor, and inventory
